It would be great to be able to write my own trading tools, and maybe even modify existing ones. Based on my research so far, I’ve only found one option. I’m curious why you’re sick of etrade. Is it their OAuth implementation that bugs you? I’m having a bit of trouble with that. Are there other reasons not to go with etrade? I’m not sure why this post was closed. I find it useful to know what APIs are out there.

It’s not as if you asked which ones were best but only what brokers offer an API. Anyhow, Iv’e been developing using Oanda’s API. This is a useful question and there are many helpful answers. You can build a fully functional trading application using the APIs offered by Zerodha. Stack Exchange used to be so good.

Then moderators started getting totally overzealous with the “close as off-topic” button. Like they’re making a valuable contribution by doing it. This is a good question and the upvotes reflect that. I’ve used them in the past as was quite happy. IB does seem to be the best option, and so far the only one with a wide range of language support.

I can’t parse their marketing materials. For access to historical data, I’ve found EODData to have reasonable prices for their data dumps. Not sure what the future of it is though. There seems to be a HTTP API: developers. I’ve been using parts of the marketcetera platform. API and instructions on how to do yours. There are also other brokers with the OEC platform and all the bells and whistles a pro could ask for.

I was looking into MBTrading for a friend. I didn’t get too far, as my friend lost interest. They had some docs and everything. IIRC, you can create a demo account for free. Don’t know much about cost for an actual account or anything.
